One 1.5-ton inverter AC plus normal household load — fridge, fans, lights, occasional pump: 5kW is the right size, and it leaves comfortable headroom.

How Much Power a 1.5-Ton AC Actually Draws
A ton of cooling is a unit of capacity, not power consumption directly, and the electrical draw depends heavily on whether the compressor is fixed-speed or variable-speed.

That surge column is where sizing mistakes happen. A non-inverter compressor switches hard on and off in cycles, and every time it kicks in it can momentarily pull three times its running current. An inverter compressor ramps up smoothly and barely surges at all.
This is confusing because of naming, so it is worth stating plainly. “Inverter AC” refers to the air conditioner’s variable-speed compressor technology. It has nothing to do with your solar or backup inverter. You can have an inverter AC running on a non-solar UPS system, or a non-inverter AC running on a hybrid solar inverter. The two words describe different machines that happen to share a name.
If you do not know which type your AC is, check the nameplate or the model number. Most ACs sold in Pakistan since roughly 2018 are inverter models, and manufacturers now market the feature prominently, so if the box or brochure does not mention “inverter” anywhere, assume it is a conventional fixed-speed unit.
Why the Distinction Changes Your Inverter Size
An inverter running an inverter AC only has to sustain a steady 1,200W to 1,500W load, plus whatever else is on. There is no meaningful spike to survive.
An inverter running a non-inverter AC has to survive a repeated surge of up to 5,000W every time the compressor cycles on, which can happen every few minutes depending on the thermostat setting and the room load. An inverter sized correctly for the running wattage alone will trip repeatedly under that pattern, usually at the worst possible moment, which is a hot afternoon with the AC working hardest.
This is why two houses with an identical single AC can need different inverters. Confirm your AC type before you size anything else.
Sizing With Other Household Load
Nobody runs the AC in isolation. Here is what a realistic household adds on top.

Worked example, inverter AC. One 1.5-ton inverter AC at 1,400W, fridge 300W, seven fans 420W, lighting 200W, TV 100W, router 15W. Steady total: 2,435W. A 1HP pump starting adds a 2,500W spike, momentarily pushing you to roughly 4,935W.
Against a 5kW inverter, that is comfortable with margin to spare. Against a 3.5kW inverter, the pump start would trip it.
Worked example, non-inverter AC. Same household load, but the AC itself now contributes a 3,500W to 5,000W surge on every compressor cycle, several times an hour, independent of whether the pump is running. This is why a non-inverter AC pushes the recommendation to 5kW even when nothing else in the house is heavy.
What About a Smaller Inverter?
A 3.5kW hybrid will run a single 1.5-ton inverter AC. Plenty of Pakistani homes do exactly this, particularly where the household is small and the pump and washing machine rarely overlap with AC use.
The risk is headroom, not the AC itself. If the fridge compressor happens to start at the same moment as the pump, or if a non-inverter appliance is added later, a tightly sized 3.5kW system has nowhere to go. For roughly Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 more, moving to 5kW removes that risk entirely and leaves room for a second appliance down the line.

Running Two 1.5-Ton ACs
This is the point where you leave the 5kW class regardless of AC type.
Two 1.5-ton inverter ACs together draw 2,400W to 3,000W before anything else in the house is counted. Add fridge, fans, lighting and a pump start, and you are approaching or exceeding 5kW on load alone, with no headroom for growth.

Solar Panel Sizing for a Single AC
If you are running the AC substantially on solar rather than just backup, panel capacity needs to cover the AC’s daytime draw plus everything else running at the same time.
A 1.5-ton inverter AC running six to eight hours a day consumes roughly 8 to 12 units daily on its own. Add household baseline load and a typical single-AC home lands around 12 to 18 units daily, or 350 to 550 units monthly.
For a 5kW inverter, 8 to 10 panels of 550W to 620W gives 4.4kW to 6.2kW of array capacity, enough to run the AC through the day and still charge a modest battery reserve for the evening. Not checking whether the AC is inverter or non-inverter. This single fact changes the recommendation more than any other variable.
Sizing to the AC alone. The fridge, fans and an occasional pump start add up, and ignoring them is how a “big enough” inverter trips anyway.
