Two patterns worth noticing before you go further.

Three-phase units cost more than single-phase units of the same rating, typically 15% to 30% more. You are paying for additional power electronics, not additional output.

Your utility connection decides most of it

If your premises has a single-phase connection, a three-phase inverter is not an upgrade. It is a mismatch. You would need to have your connection converted by the DISCO first, which involves an application, a load assessment, possibly a transformer change, and a wait measured in months rather than weeks.

If your premises already has three phase, which is common for shops, small factories, cold storage, commercial buildings and larger farms, a three-phase inverter is usually the right answer because it balances your load across all three legs.

The single-phase 12kW situation

High Voltage Versus Low Voltage Battery

This distinction barely matters at 5kW. At 12kW it changes your whole system design.

Low voltage (LV) systems run at 48V, the same as residential inverters. Battery options are plentiful, prices are competitive, and any electrician who has wired a home system understands it. The downside is current. Pushing 12kW through a 48V bus means very high DC current, which demands thick expensive cable and generates heat.

High voltage (HV) systems run at 200V to 500V depending on the design. Lower current for the same power, thinner cable, less resistive loss, better round-trip efficiency. The downsides are a narrower battery selection, higher pack prices, and a genuine safety requirement for a competent installer, because HV DC is dangerous in ways 48V is not.

Net Metering at 12kW

Approval gets more involved above 10kW. A few things to sort out before you buy rather than after.

Check the sanctioned load on your connection. DISCOs generally will not approve a net-metering system larger than your sanctioned load. If your connection is sanctioned at 10kW, a 12kW system creates a problem. Enhancing sanctioned load is a separate application with its own timeline.

Confirm the exact model is on your DISCO’s approved inverter list. Lists are updated periodically and a model approved last year may not be listed now.
